Digital marketing is a rapidly growing field, changing as quickly as businesses can adapt. Search engine optimization, white hat marketing, keyword research – new trends are constantly emerging, with brands struggling to catch up. In 2013 and going forward, “mobile web” is a huge component of digital marketing and business. So what does mobile web refer to? Well, if you’re reading this on a smartphone or tablet, you’re on it. The mobile web is the internet accessed through cellular telephone service providers like Verizon and AT&T, and for more and more people around the world, the mobile web is their primary method of going online. Want some proof?
120 million Twitter users have used a mobile device to post to Twitter in the last month. Of those 120 million users, 94.8 million are accessing it more than once a day. Ok, but that’s Twitter – something that was designed based off the limits of the SMS (text message) and geared toward mobile use. How about Facebook? Of the 128 million daily users in the United States, 101 million are accessing it via their mobile device. YouTube? More than 1 billion views per day. These are huge numbers of people who are relying upon their mobile devices for everything from researching a restaurant to reading the news to searching for local companies.
So what does that mean for business? Optimization is key. You want mobile users to be able to easily navigate your site, find the information they need, and utilize your services. The keyword here is easily – many mobile users are task oriented, so they already have an idea of what they’re looking for. Making your relevant content easy to find and view on a mobile device will up your likelihood of user follow-through.
When building a new site, you want to make sure that you utilize responsive web design to get an optimal viewing experience across a variety of devices. There are few things more frustrating than loading a website onto your mobile device, only to discover that you have to scroll side-to-side to see all content on a page. Everyone expects to scroll up and down – don’t make them work even harder to see your content! You can also go a step farther, and create a version of your website solely for mobile use. The Huffington Post is an excellent example of this – not only is their mobile site address easier to type (m.huffpost.com), but their website is easy to navigate.
