MLP & Film Connection – Where Lessons Meet Real Life

Play Pause Unmute Mute

A few weeks ago, we got some advice from a good friend of ours, Cari Shane. As we move more into marketing, she pointed out that we needed to switch around how we market ourselves. We can’t just let our (excellent) work stand on its own, we need to showcase our knowledge, demonstrate the need for our services, and really establish ourselves as the professionals we are. So we decided to start a video series to do just that! In our series we’re doling out advice, sharing some of our tips and tricks, and talking about the experiences we’ve learned from – all to share our knowledge and hopefully make YOUR video production easy as pie.

Our move into vlogging (well, kinda, but with our fancy camera instead of a webcam) is perfectly timed. Mark just began teaching three new students through RRFC – the Radio, Recording, and Film Connection. The program is an accelerated course that pairs students with business owners to mentor them and give them hands-on experience. In this case, our three students were our crew as we filmed the first episode of our series.

We started the production with our editor and camera operator, David, giving the students a lesson on lighting. (You can check out Courtney’s recent post for similar info). After that we went over some best practices like using marks for the actors, clapping when you roll cameras to help the editors sync sound, and the proper way to hold a boom mic. Even though it was a small production, the students were excited to get some hands-on experience on a set, and are already looking forward to next time.

We’ll have the first video in our series out soon. As we start to plan and produce more, are there any topics that you’d like to learn more about? Any questions about video and film production that you haven’t found answers to? Shoot me an email – [email protected] – and your question could be addressed in a future video! In the meantime, take a look at some of our set photos from last night!
